Pregnancy Aids, Products and Programs Review Site
The ovaries are part of a woman's reproductive system. They are located in the abdomen, are the size and shape of almonds, and they release the hormones that keep a woman's menstrual cycle running. They also release an egg every month during the time that a woman is fertile. These eggs are then available to be fertilized, and if fertilization takes place, a woman becomes pregnant.
If your ovaries start to become painful on a regular basis, you may want to see your
doctor, depending upon whether it is something that just happens briefly or whether
the discomfort is felt over a long period of time, or becomes chronic.
Frequently, ovarian pain is felt in the middle of the menstrual cycle; this is usually
caused a condition called Mittelschmerz, which is something that happens when the
ovary releases an egg, and is generally a small twinge or cramp that is benign and
can be treated with over the counter analgesics. Sometimes pain in the ovaries is
caused by a functional ovarian cyst.

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-
Women who begin to experience ovarian or pelvic pain on a more chronic basis, including
after their period, after or during intercourse or in the middle of their cycle and
who exhibit symptoms such as irregular periods or excessive hair growth should be
checked by their physician for PCOS, or Polycystic Ovarian Disease.
PCOS occurs in between four and ten percent of women between the age of eighteen
and forty, and is one of the primary causes of infertility. Other common symptoms
of polycystic ovaries include obesity, diabetes and acne. Though getting pregnant
with PCOS is possible, it usually requires some sort of fertility treatment.
Ovarian pain is a common symptom of polycystic ovaries. Unlike what happens with
a functional ovarian cyst, the cysts that form when a woman suffers from PCOS are
caused by a hormonal imbalance. Women with polycystic ovaries have several small
cysts on their ovaries, which are usually enlarged.
Nobody knows what causes the disease, and there is no specific test for polycystic ovarian disease, but women with PCOS are found to have specific symptoms which, when grouped together, aid in diagnosis.
These symptoms usually start shortly after a woman begins to menstruate, and include an excess of male hormones called androgens in their system. These can be detected through a blood test. Other telltale symptoms include excessive facial hair growth, acne, and obesity.
The most common symptom of PCOS is irregular or absent periods, and this is caused
by a lack of regular ovulation. There are serious complications that can arise from
polycystic ovarian disease beyond infertility because the disease affects several
organs; it is important that appropriate pcos treatment is sought in order to properly
manage the potential for diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and cholesterol.
Ovarian pain after menopause is not uncommon, and though it is usually caused by
a cyst on the ovary, it is rarely caused by polycystic ovaries.
