Getting Pregnant With PCOS

If you're one of the five to ten percent of women who are of childbearing age and who suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome, getting pregnant is probably something that you think about a lot.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS, is the most common cause of infertility; it is a condition in which a woman suffers from irregular or absent menstruation, acne, high levels of male hormones and cysts on the ovaries.

Though it isn't clear what causes PCOS, there are many indicators pointing to genetic causes. PCOS can lead to other conditions, including insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity and heart conditions. Despite this, for women with PCOS who are trying to get pregnant, there are a variety of solutions available to help you conceive and carry a healthy baby to full term.

Getting Pregnant with PCOS Naturally

If you have PCOS and are
trying to get pregnant, there are a number of different treatments available, but the first thing that most healthcare providers recommend in the treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome is weight loss. Continued below....

Losing weight has a marked impact on many of the symptoms that PCOS causes. Simple changes in the way that you eat or in your exercise regimen can make a world of difference, including lowering your androgen levels and increasing the frequency of your ovulation.

Studies have shown that a woman with polycystic ovarian syndrome who loses as little as five percent of her body weight will experience a dramatic positive impact on insulin resistance, acne and blood pressure. This is particularly helpful because a lot of the more common medical PCOS treatments will actually have a negative impact on your fertility or the health of an unborn child. These include birth control pills, which stop ovulation, and androgen blockers, which can cause birth defects.

Getting Pregnant with PCOS and Clomid

If you are open to using medical intervention for
getting pregnant with PCOS, the most common medical treatment prescribed is a medication called Clomid, or Clomiphene. This is a fertility drug; it causes your body to ovulate at an increased rate, and often results in multiple births, meaning twins, triplets or beyond.

Other fertility treatments that are used for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome are the different assisted reproductive techniques that involve physical intervention in the process of fertilization. These include in vitro fertilization and egg donation, in which another woman's egg is used in cases when a woman is unable to produce her own.

Getting Pregnant with PCOS Metformin

Metformin is a medication that is used to treat insulin resistance; it is often used as a PCOS treatment, but is not actually FDA-approved for that purpose. But studies have shown that women who are treated with metformin do have an increased chance of getting pregnant, and many physicians prescribe a combination of metformin and clomid to maximize the chances of getting pregnant.

The combination seems to reduce the incidence of multiple pregnancies, which can be beneficial since women with PCOS are at increased risk of pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and pregnancy-induced high blood pressure.

Preterm birth and the need for a caesarian section delivery are also more likely for women who get pregnant with PCOS; this is in large part due to their tendency towards obesity, which can make carrying to full term difficult, and natural birth riskier.

Studies are currently being carried out to determine whether metformin taken during pregnancy by women who have PCOS reduces the risk of miscarriage and early labor.
